If you haven't seen this before and want to see a human "trained" with a shock collar, please watch. It's clearly not the same as using it on a dog but I think it gives you a good idea of why shocking a dog works so well to suppress behavior. Even though the "dog " in this case can have the purpose explained and chooses to participate, watch what happens after only a couple of minutes of wearing the shock collar. Contrast that with the "dog " trained by positive reinforcement.
